In the new National Curriculum a great emphasis has been placed on the importance of reading for pleasure. Studies have shown that reading for pleasure greatly enhances children’s academic achievements in all areas.
At Church Drive, we are committed to helping all our children succeed and therefore we have introduced a number of initiatives that provide additional opportunities and encouragement for children to read for pleasure both in school and at home.
Reading With Your Child
Below you can view or download a useful information booklet for parents with guidance on how to best support your child by reading with them.
Community Links with Bebington Library
We have been building on our links with Bebington Library. Many of our classes visit the library during the course of the school year to share stories, research projects and find out about the facilities on offer.
In addition the Children's Librarian, Mrs Roe, has visited us to share stories with Key Stage 1 and Foundation 1 children in school.
We would encourage all parents to enrol their children as members of the library if you have not already done so. This is a free service which enables you to borrow from a wide range of books, including audiobooks, and also DVDs. Becoming a member of any Wirral library will allow you to borrow from any other branch in the area. Visit any branch to pick up an application form.
Key Stage 1 Parent Workshops
As part of our Reading for Pleasure programme we have introduced parent workshops for Key Stage 1 children. The workshops have been a chance for parents/carers to enjoy reading with their child and to speak to staff about to help their children with reading at home. Letters will be sent home to notify parents of the details of any future workshops for their child's class.
We have reopened the School Library for Key Stages 1 and 2. It now operates in a new location next to the dining hall. The library has proved to be very popular with students and provides a great way for students to enjoy books for free.
